Vocabulary: False Friends
FALSE FRIENDS are words that look similar to words in your own language so you can wrongly assume that the meaning is the same. ( son palabras que son muy parecidas a una palabra en castellano pero tienen otro significado).
Here we give you three examples:
. Formidable: causing fear, difficult to achieve (que causa miedo, difícil de lograr).
To prepare for that difficult exam in only 3 months! That`s a formidable task! I don´t think I can do it. (Prepararse para ese examen difícil en sólo 3 meses! Eso es algo difícil de lograr! No creo que pueda hacerlo.)
. Wonderful: very good, pleasant or enjoyable (muy bueno, maravilloso).
She's a wonderful person. Everyone likes and admires her. (Ella es una persona maravillosa; todos la admiran.)
. Assist: help (ayudar).
The police called for members of the public to assist in the investigation. (La policía llamó a miembros del público oara que ayuden en la investigación).
. Attend: be present at (asistir, ir a)
We hope a large number of people attend the conference next week. (Esperamos que mucha gente vaya a la conferencia la semana que viene).
. Sympathetic: showing sympathy or understanding, willing to listen to others' problem (adjetivo que describe a una persona que siempre está dispuesta a escuchar a los otros cuando tienen problemas).
He`s usually rather impatient and unfriendly, but I must say he was very sympathetic when I told him about my family problems.
. Nice: pleasant (simpática, agradable).
It was a nice party, I enjoyed it very much.
